Muscle Knots

Muscle knots are very common. Common enough that the scientific name for them is “myofascial trigger points”. There are many causes that develop muscle knots. Some common causes are injury, poor posture and overexertion. Muscle knots or trigger points are tender spots in the muscle. There are “active” and “latent” muscle knots. Active muscle knots are ones that actively refer pain either locally or to another location in the body. Latent muscle knots are ones that do not refer pain to other areas, but exhibit pain when pressure is applied.

Muscle Knot (Commonly called Trigger Point) Therapy

The purpose of muscle knot therapy is to re-educate the muscles into a pain free state. The term for this is Myofascial Release. There are different approaches therapists can take in muscle knot release therapy. One common approach is to apply pressure to the tender muscle to deactivate the muscle knots. Therapists do this through massage or use of various tools, such as foam rollers. Within the past few years a single foam roller has been used to perform what is called self myofascial release.

The Multi-Roller is a foam roller system developed to make using foam rollers easier for self myofascial trigger point release by applying pressure to sore areas in fascial and muscle to deactivate muscle knots.
